Pupil Premium Grant
The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is money given to schools to support children who are eligible for Free School Meals, children who are in care and children of Service Families.
The Department of education states that:
”It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium, allocated to schools per FSM pupil, is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for individual pupils.”
How we allocate this money
At Shotley CP School, we use the PPG to fund a number of activities and interventions to support pupil progress and attainment. These include:
- One to one tuition for children who need that additional support
- Specialist intervention programmes to close the gap in performance between advantaged and disadvantaged children
- Additional TA support in Early years
- Additional TA support for phonics in EYFS, Year 1 and 2
- HLTA support for maths in KS2
- Support with funding for school trips, both residential and day trips
- Support with funding for out of hours activities
What impact has this had?
Pupil Premium money for 2016-2017 was £20,869, which reflected the children of our school community who received free school meals.
This was spent according to our allocation plan on individual and small group tuition, various support and intervention programmes across the school and support for out of hours activities.
The impact of this allocation for all children who were supported by this funding was at least good progress for maths, reading and writing.
For some of the children, the 1:1 tuition allowed problem areas to be addressed and a whole level progress was made over the academic year, ensuring that these children attained at least expected levels.
In 2017 - 2018, we are continuing with the above provision as well as extending it to working with the pre-school to ensure continued improvement and ease of transition.
We have put in additional support for some children in EYFS and KS1 who require extra help with speech and language development, and in mastering some of the basic skills in reading, writing and number work, through small group and 1 to 1 intervention programs such as 'Closing the Gap with Numicon' and 'Bear Necessities', ‘One plus one’ and ‘The power of 2’. In Key Stage 2, we are implementing a writing program called ‘Fresh Start’ to help improve outcomes in writing for targeted children.
